There are two separate municipalities for New Paltz:
The Town of New Paltz and the Village of New Paltz.

The Town of New Paltz consists of the hamlets of North Ohioville, South Ohioville, the Village of New Paltz, and the home of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The township is located almost half-way between NYC and Albany, about 85 miles from each.

The Village of New Paltz consists of the Village of New Paltz and the State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz).

A "hip college town with a proud history,” New Paltz boasts the vibrancy of a campus environment, the charm of its past with Huguenot Street--claimed to be the oldest street in the nation--a town and village buzzing with eclectic shops, antique stores, galleries, restaurants, and more, all amidst the beautiful scenic backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge.  All of these attractions combine to make New Paltz one of the most frequented tourist areas of Ulster County.

The town was founded in 1678 by French Huguenot settlers and was governed by a kind of corporation called the Duzine. This was composed of the the 12 partners who acquired the royal patent consisting of approximately 33,000 acres, which was eventually divided up into large plots. The secession of the Town of Lloyd and parts of Shawangunk, Esopus and Gardiner, between 1843 and 1853, reduced New Paltz to its present size. In 1887, the Village of New Paltz was incorporated within the town.

Early industry was primary agricultural, with a commercial center located on the east shore of the Wallkill River, where the first settlers huddled along Huguenot Street, the nations' oldest, constantly occupied street.

The establishment of the Wallkill Valley Railroad in 1870 gave a great boost to New Paltz farmers. In addition, the opening of the New York State Thruway in the early 1950's further connected the township to the still vibrant network of commerce up and down the valley.
